Breakthrough in battle for spouses’ pensions

TENS of thousands of farmers’ wives have been denied pensions in their own right, because of how their partnership in the farm was legally defined.

And because they did not earn a wage, they did not have the opportunity to make PRSI payments, when such payments became obligatory for farmers about 20 years ago.

As a result, they were not entitled to contributory state pensions.
