Horse trainer adds €1.5m farm to holding

THERE has been a flurry of land sales in North Cork recently, much of it associated with the bloodstock industry.

Horse trainer adds €1.5m farm to holding

Jim Culloty, the three-in-a-row Cheltenham Gold Cup winning rider and now a racehorse trainer, has added on to his Mount Corbett holding in Churchtown, with the purchase of a local farm of about 100 acres.

The property is believed to have been bought for around €1.5 million through auctioneer Christy Buckley. It is now being used for an uphill gallop, according to Mr Culloty. The trainer is still renovating his Mount Corbett House property, having hoped to be in situ for Christmas, but the listed, 5,000 square foot residence is taking longer than expected to restore.

The newly purchased land adjoins the Mount Corbett property, which the Killarney man bought in 2003 for €900,000, and he and his wife have built a new stable yard to accommodate the 25 horses they’re presently training.

Some of these are expected to run in the next couple of weeks but, like most farmers in the country at the moment, he is being stymied by bad weather and sodden paddocks.

Meanwhile, a property that’s only a couple of miles away as the crow flies is also believed to have been sold.

An investor from Northern Ireland is believed to have purchased Hill Farm in Liscarroll, along with another 100 acres in the locality. Hill Farm was set up as a mini-stud by Terry Jennings, a well-known English horse breeder and trainer.

With 26 acres, it has been on the market with John Hodnett of SWS and Maurice Cohalan of Cohalan Downing. It failed to sell at auction in the autumn when carrying a €1.3 million guide price. The eventual purchase price is believed to have been close to the guide.

Hill Farm is located just outside Liscarroll village, and was marketed as a ready-to-go stud with four-bedroomed, luxury residence.
