Warmest September for almost 50 years
It was the warmest September for around 50 years of record in most places, while it was the warmest for over a century at some long-term stations.
At Malin Head it was the warmest September since 1895, while at Dublin, it was the warmest since 1865.
Rainfall was above normal everywhere, and it was particularly wet in the west and south (wettest September for six or seven years generally, and the wettest since 1985 at Belmullet).
Shannon Airport’s 48mm on the 21st was its rainiest September day since the station opened in 1945.
Still, several weather stations had their sunniest September day for more than 20 years, on either the 7th or 8th.
A tornado was observed near Aclare, Co Sligo, on the 23rd, and the former hurricane Gordon brought gales on the 21st and 22nd as it moved northwards over Ireland.
