Just before going out to win the international speed derby on Dorada the following day, Breen was informed he’d been chosen as the male winner of the Longines Press Award for Elegance, with Christine McCrea from the USA takingthe ladies honour.

The award earns both riders valuable points which count towards their final ranking in the competition.

The overall winner will be decided at the final Super League event of the season, at Barcelona on September 15, where the champion will receive a trophy, a cheque for 20,000 Swiss francs and a set of Longines watches.

Judges said Breen’s level-headed determination — as much as his beautifully fluid performance, excellent rhythm and the great harmony between him and his horse — were what him the special award.
