ICMSA laud skim milk powder price increase

THE Irish Dairy Board decision to increase the price of skim milk powder by €90/tonne has been welcomed by ICMSA as ‘a significant boost’ to under pressure dairy farmers.

The resulting increased return to co-ops of 2.8c per gallon must be passed in full to farmers, said Dominic Cronin, Chairman of ICMSA’s Dairy Committee.

According to the Irish Dairy Board, the increase follows a drought-related decline in EU production which, with strong demand from the food and feed sectors and lowering of stock levels, boosted the market for skim.

But a Board spokesperson warned the European Commission has been gradually implementing the €206 per tonne cut in the butter intervention support price agreed in the last CAP reform, and EU butter prices will no longer be supported by intervention after August 24.
