Farming in the Republic will be severely restricted if the organic nitrogen level is not set at a realistic and viable level, according to Cork Central Irish Farmers’ Association county executive chairman Gerard O’Connell.

He was announcing details of a public seminar on the nitrates directive to be held at Blarney Park Hotel, Cork, next Tuesday evening under the joint auspices of Cork Central and Cork North IFA.

Mr O’Connell called on the Government to submit to the European Union the organic nitrogen levels that were agreed by the Irish Farmers’ Association in the social partnership agreement.
