A CASE of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in the Thrace region of Turkey, near the border with Greece.

It is the first outbreak of the disease in Turkey in almost five years and is thought to have resulted from the introduction of new animals or animal products into a herd.

The outbreak was confirmed following laboratory tests conducted on samples at a foot-and-mouth disease institute in Ankara.
