Farming lauded by McAleese

THE farming way of life was hailed by President Mary McAleese at the National Ploughing Championships yesterday.

“For all its struggles, it is the backbone of the country, the guardian of our story as a people,” she said, before setting off a flare to close this year’s competitions.

President McAleese said “the unique, wonderful gathering” had transformed Grangeford, Tullow, into a holiday resort, a giant agricultural convention centre, a massive international trade show and a huge competition arena.
