Cronin criticises milk quota exchange

The €2.60 per gallon being paid by for milk quota by dairy farmers in Denmark is a clear example of the negative effects of a quota exchange, according to Dominic Cronin, chairman of ICMSA’s dairy committee.

Such a system would be “utter madness” for Ireland, and would be seriously detrimental to the future of active committed milk producers.

The price of milk quota would have to fall substantially in 2005 if the income position of active milk producers was to be protected, he warned. “Based on the analysis provided, the ICMSA proposal of a price of 70c/gallon in 2005 is fully justified,” said Mr Cronin.

He said the price of quota must continue to be controlled by the Minister, not by the cheque book.
