PEOPLE who have given outstanding service to cattle breeding, exhibiting and judging, have been honoured by inclusion in a Hall of Fame.

The Athlone Agri-Show Festival Committee introduced The Cattle Person Hall of Fame Awards as a means of recognising the contribution of such people to the development of the Irish livestock industry.

Pedigree beef breeds nominated their candidates, and Minister of State Tom Parlon presented the awards, sponsored by Univet Ireland Ltd.

Irish Shows Association chairman Paddy Joe Foy also launched the classes schedule for Athlone Agri-Show Festival (which will take place next Sunday, June 29), which is headed up by Michael Flanagan, chairman.

The recipients of the first Univet Cattle Person Hall of Fame Awards were:

* from the Angus Breed Society; Gerry Mulligan, Dromod, Co Leitrim.

* Aberdeen Angus Association; Bartle McEnroe, Liss House, Oldcastle, Co Meath.

* Belgian Blue Cattle Breed Society; Michael Woods, Togher, Drogheda, Co Louth.

* Blonde D’Aquitane Breed Society; Jim Carey, Enfield, Co Meath.

* Charolais Society; Mrs Wallburgha Monaghan, Staffordstown House, Navan, Co. Meath.

* Commercial Cattle Exhibitors Society; Michael Hannon, Adare, Co Limerick.

* Hereford Breed Society; John Holloway, Horseleap, Moate, Co Westmeath.

* Limousin Society; Dr Roger McCarrick, Drumree, Co Meath.

* Shorthorn Breeders Co-op; John O’Hara, Elphin, Co Roscommon.

* Irish Salers; Michael McKeon, Gurteen, Co Sligo.

* Simmental; John Connaughton, Dysart, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
