Dairygold defends decision to shut plants

DAIRYGOLD yesterday described its decision to end pig slaughtering and boning operations in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, and to close its processing plant in Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

The company said that it is unaviodable, given the operations are no longer competitive in the current market.

The decision will result in 270 redundancies across both plants - 100 in Roscrea, which will close by the end of next month, and 170 in the Mitchelstown pig slaughtering and boning plant, which will cease operations by the end of October.
