Mart for underfinished tip

CATTLE farmers are losing €100 by selling under-finished, good quality 600kg bullocks to the factories, says ICSA suckler chairman Frank Kehoe.

“Due to bumper crops of fodder beet, and large surpluses of sugar beet, there is a buoyant demand for forward store bullocks and heifers in the mart,” he said.

According to Mr Kehoe, “Factory agents have confirmed that there are large numbers of unfit heifers and bullocks entering the factory trade.”

Farmers were getting about €820 from factories, including the €80 slaughter premium, for an under-finished, good quality 600kg bullock.

Farmers should take advantage of the current mart trade, to get €900 to €950 for these animals, said Mr Kehoe.

Where a fat score of 2.0 is likely, the mart will give a much better return, he said.
