Danish lessons on nitrates directive

Denmark: Ireland can learn lessons from the implementation of the nitrates directive in Denmark, including how to obtain derogations, according to Mairéad McGuinness, Fine Gael MEP for Ireland East.

But she warned, after a meeting with Commission officials, that a derogation would not be easy.

“Denmark which has been more compliant with the nitrates directive over a long number of years has managed to secure a derogation from the strict 170kgs limit, but the derogation applies to just 5% of land in Denmark and 4% of farmers.”

Ms McGuinness said the Commission is clear there was no getting away from the central point of the directive which is to provide for clean water.
