Bord Bia scheme gets independent inspectors
In the previous EN 45011 accredited scheme, farm inspections were carried out by meat factory personnel.
The revised scheme was issued to the meat industry in early January, having been developed by a Technical Advisory Committee representing farmers, processors and the regulatory authorities.
The meat industry, through its representative organisation, Meat Industry Ireland, has selected an internationally known body, EFSIS (European Food Safety Inspection Service) to carry out the farm audits. Bord Bia has undertaken to carry out the certification function.
Producers who wish to participate can do so through the meat plants, or can apply directly to Bord Bia.
Farms will be audited every 18 months. Audit reports are submitted to a Certification Committee for review. Producers who achieve the required score will be issued with a certification card and will be listed on a certified members’ database.
According to Bord Bia, the scheme, although rigorous, should not require much additional work for farmers.
Keeping animal records, maintaining high traceability levels for feed and medications, and ensuring high animal welfare and husbandry standards, are among the more important requirements.
A Bord Bia seminar for meat plant personnel, on EN45011 accreditation, will be held on February 23.
