ICMSA seeks rise in farm funds
President Pat O’Rourke, speaking after a meeting with Finance Minister Brian Cowen, said he had emphasised the need for a four-year investment programme to start immediately.
Farmers faced with reduced output due to the nitrates directive and falling farm prices cannot finance the level of investment now required.
Mr O’Rourke noted that the Government appointed consultant Denis Brosnan had independently recommended a substantial grant aid increase.
“Our proposal to the minister was that the grant rate be increased to 60% with 75% in disadvantaged areas,” he said.
