€1,000 for Macroom Champion
A good entry of quality stock for the annual event was rewarded with prices of up to €545 over €/kg being paid for choice continental weanling bulls. Prices ranged from €180 over. Non continental breed bulls ranged €110 over to €375 over. Continental weanling heifers made €95 over to €290 over and non continentals sold at €50 to €155 over.
A Belgian Blue weighing 435kg sold for €700, another scaling 390kg made €680, a Limousin weighing 400kg fetched €680 and a lot of four Simmentals weighing 412kg made €560. Bulls were improved by up to €40/head at Kilmallock Mart, while the shippers were capping the heifer prices at €100 over €/kg.
On the other hand prices were back a little at Kanturk Mart yesterday where the continental bulls sold at €180-€260 over and non-continental breeds made €70-€175 over. Prices for continental heifers peaked at €130 over - selling back to €100 over - with the non continental ranging €70-€100 over.
Poor quality weanlings continue to be a hard sell at prices which question the viability of the animals which were purchased for the purpose of qualifying for a premium payment, no longer an option under the single payment.
There was a big sale of adult cattle at Fermoy Mart yesterday with 1,200 head on offer. Prices were improved by €30-€40/head for the bullocks with an excellent trade reported for heifers. Beef bullocks made up to €260 over, forward stores ranging €70-€240 over, and light stores selling at €60-€170 over. Store heifers sold at €60-€175 over.
