AN era in primary pig meat processing ends in Mitchelstown today when slaughtering ends at Dairygold Co-op’s long established Galtee plant, which will close tomorrow as part of the co-op’s restructuring programme.

As a result, a total of 140 workers have lost their jobs in Mitchelstown.

There were a further 70 redundancies with the closure last month of another Dairygold pig processing plant in Roscrea, Co Tipperary.
