IRISH pig producers are paying more for compound feed than their counterparts in Denmark, Holland and Britain, an EU survey has shown.

The IFA said the survey, carried out in February, puts Ireland’s composite feed price at €214 per tonne, compared with €175 per tonne in Denmark, €184 per tonne in Holland and €191 per tonne in Britain.

Pigs Committee chairman Pat O’Keeffe said Irish producers couldn't continue to pay this high price for feed and remain competitive in a weak marketplace.

“The €214 per tonne price does not include the increase of up to €6 per tonne sought by some of the millers since March this year,” he said, explaining that feed costs represent 65% to 70% of the cost of producing a pig.
