TEAGASC, the State’s agri-food development body, has earmarked €20 million for an expansion of its food research programme.

There will be an increased emphasis on functional foods to provide health benefits to consumers.

Money, raised from the disposal of land assets, will be devoted to research in this area.

The announcement was made yesterday during an industry communications day at Teagasc Moorepark Food Research Centre in Fermoy, Co Cork.
