Cashman in Hall of Fame

A FARMER'S decision to sell his cattle and concentrate on thoroughbred horses was vindicated at the recent Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Breeding and Racing Awards Dinner recently.

The Hall of Fame award (sponsored by Kildangan Stud) for a lifetime of achievement was presented to Liam Cashman, the owner and manager of Rathbarry Stud at Fermoy, Co Cork.

The men and women who keep Ireland at the highest level on the international breeding and racing stage gathered in the Killashee House Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare, where the ITBA, the representative body of the bloodstock industry, showcased another year of magnificent achievement for Irish bred horses.

Triumph after triumph was recalled - Irish-breds winning five Grade 1 Cheltenham races, including the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Gold Cup; Hedgehunter winning the Aintree Grand National; and Irish-breds winning two out of every three Grade 1 National Hunt races.

Michael Hickey, breeder of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kicking King; Edward Joyce, breeder of Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Moscow Flyer; and Patrick Joyce, breeder of Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace all received the NH Special Achievement Award 2005, sponsored by Horse Racing Ireland and presented by Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan.

Tony Keogh, received the Small Breeder Award, sponsored by Sean Barrett Bloodstock Insurance, for Hedgehunter.
