Last week’s decision by Irish Sugar, part of the Greencore group, to close its Carlow factory in mid-March and the logistics of transporting beet to the sole remaining plant in Mallow will top the agenda at the meeting.

Jim O’Regan, chairman, IFA sugar beet section, which has organised tonight’s meeting, said the reaction among the country’s 3,800 sugar beet growers to the decision to close the Carlow plant was one of surprise and shock.
