Numbers on offer have been steadily building up at least three weeks earlier than usual, with a very firm trade over recent weeks for the good weanlings, which have been making close to €500 over €/kg for the tops of the continental bulls.

Yesterday, Clare Marts Group announced details of their weanling shows and sales, most of which are being brought forward to August.

Sales will operate at four centres in Co Clare, a region of the country which has been building up a good reputation for both numbers on offer and the quality of the stock in recent years, as a result of dedicated breeding programmes.

One of the first of the weanling shows and sales will be held at Ennis Mart on Tuesday, August 26, where an entry of up to 1,700 head is expected at the state-of-the-art sales centre, which can accommodate 2,000 head in the all-covered mart with excellent ventilation.

Shows and sales will be held at Ennistymon on Friday, August 29, at Scariff on Saturday, August 30, and at Kilrush on Wednesday, September 3.

Clare Marts Group general manager Donal Ryan said that weanlings had been coming out in increasing numbers at Ennis Mart since early July, where currently 600-700 head are on offer each Tuesday with the entry set to increase to over 1,000 head each Tuesday through August.

Weanling numbers have also been increasing steadily at Castleisland Mart since early July, where large sales are also expected over the coming six weeks.
