Irish Sugar to apply for rail depot

Irish Sugar has confirmed that it will lodge a planning application with Carlow County Council next Monday for the establishment of a rail depot in the county.

The company described the proposed depot as ‘a facility for loading beet on to trains, for onward transport by rail to Mallow’ in a public notice.

Chief executive Dr Sean Brady said he hopes the application is successful and the railhead be in position for this year’s beet campaign.

“However, in the event that the planning process is delayed, beyond Irish Sugar’s control, beet will transport to Mallow by road until such times as the Carlow rail head option can be established,” he said.
