Ruling on prescriptions welcomed

Europe: The European Parliament has passed two crucial amendments, which will allow member states the right to decide which animal medicines should be the subject of a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) regime.

The amendments tabled jointly by Avril Doyle, MEP, with 21 others whose groupings within the parliament represent 87% of the votes, were adopted overwhelmingly by the Environment Committee.

Director of APHA Declan O’Brien said the representative body for manufacturers and sole distributors of animal health and plant health products in Ireland welcomed the decisions.

He called on member states and the commission to follow the position in the parliament and to reject a regime where all medicines destined for use in food-producing animals would be the subject of a POM regime.

Mr O’Brien said APHA appreciates the ongoing support of the minister and his department. It also appreciates the work of Avril Doyle, and the support of Patricia McKenna and Jim Fitzsimons, who co-signed the amendments.

Mrs Doyle said the decisions represent an important breakthrough for people with an interest in animal welfare, Irish farmers and agricultural merchants. She called on the member States to support the approach agreed in parliament.

“This will ensure we can continue the safe and effective distribution that has been proven to work in Ireland,” she said.
