Outrage at pig price cut

IFA Pigs Committee Vice Chairman, Michael Maguire has described the 4c/kg price cut imposed last Friday as a sickening blow to their incomes.

He said this price cut, on top of the recent 5c/kg drop, has sparked frustration and outrage among producers.

He said: “The current price of €1.25/kg doesn’t come close to a satisfactory return from the market place. The largest Irish pig processor, Glanbia is being accused by a number of market analysts of leading a product price cut, while Dawn, McCarron’s and the remainder of small processors all followed without a second thought.”

Mr Maguire said that serious questions are also being asked of the largest so-called Irish brands.
