GALTEE MEATS has signed a deal worth €20 million annually with Musgrave SuperValu-Centra (MSVC) for the exclusive supply of pork products.

MSVC services more than 550 independent SuperValu and Centra stores, while Galtee, part of Dairygold co-op, processes pork from some 80 farmers in Munster and south Leinster.

Galtee will process almost 6,000 pigs a week to meet the MSVC demand, which represents 15% of the total national kill for the pork market.

MSVC managing director Michael Nason said the deal gives the company a more integrated supply system.

Galtee represents the farmers and primary processors and MSVC completes the supply chain with its dedicated processing and central distribution system to the SuperValu and Centra stores.

“We’re bringing efficiency to the supply chain, which has many benefits, including more security and a better return to farmers, as well as better value for consumers in SuperValu and Centra.

“Enhanced traceability and guaranteed supply of 100% Irish product also secures consumer confidence, particularly where there have been quality issues around pork produced on the continent in the past,” he said.

Musgrave SuperValu-Centra will develop a wider range of pork products, including value-added meat, such as seasoned and marinated chops and ribs.

Quality assurance and food safety will also be enhanced through the new supply deal, with farm to fork traceability, and all pork supply coming from farmers working under the Bord Bia quality approved scheme.

The more efficient supply chain will ensure fresher product and the ability to react quicker to market needs and grow market share. Galtee Meats’ John Cunningham said it was delighted to secure the Musgrave deal and looked forward to developing the pork business with the retailer.

“Working in partnership with a major retailer allows us to invest in the best systems and explore options to add value to our product, as well as improve market opportunity for producers.”

Galtee Meats, a subsidiary of Dairygold Co-Op, is Ireland’s largest farmer-owned food company and multi-purpose agribusiness. It employs around 3,000 people and has an annual turnover of more than 1 billion.

The co-op is involved in dairy and meat processing, liquid milk production, animal feed manufacture, grain trading, retailing, and the provision of farm services. With annual retail sales in excess of €2.3 billion, MSVC is the country’s single largest operator in the grocery sector.

The company said it sells more Irish-produced goods than any other supermarket operator in the country, with 70% of product originating in Ireland. Including Irish agents and distributors, 90% of all goods sold in SuperValu and Centra are sourced from Irish companies.
