Before Finance Minister Michael Noonan and Taoiseach Enda Kenny implement the dictates of the IMF and troika, to hit every senior, child, student, chronically ill patient, unemployed, and least paid employee with €440m in cuts, let them first adjust the massive tax avoidance scheme maintained for Apple and other corporations, for which the US Senate called Ireland a tax haven.

In her letter (Aug 9) Cliona McCormack of the Irish Heart Foundation either deliberately or accidentally misrepresented the stated position of the minister for finance on the introduction of plain packaging of cigarettes.

While science has been making great advances, human values remains stuck in history, which doesn't bode well for the future.
