The European Central Bank letter was a ‘gun to our heads’. But Fianna Fail was the political party that put us in the bailout.

I refer to Claire Droney’s enlightened article (November 7) detailing how the “sense of home will be lost with(out) longwave.”
Lucinda Creighton (Irish Examiner, November 7) should be reminded that when the journalist Gavin Sheridan and his colleagues first began the process of requesting copies of the correspondence between Ireland and the European Central Bank (ECB) it wasn’t only the ECB who blocked them every step of the way until the matter was escalated to the European Ombudsman.
I refer to Victoria White’s Irish Examiner article of November 6 (‘Anti-water campaigners protest too much’).
Previously in your paper I have seen Eircodes likened to eVoting machines due to their wasting large amounts of taxpayers’ money. I now realise that this comparison is incorrect.
When Joan Burton, standing in the Taoiseach’s place in the Dáil, announces she expects water charges for a family of 4 adults to be less than €200 she was, we are told, speaking on a personal basis.
When huge amounts of of tax-payer money was poured into our banks we were told we were all share-holders.

The tone of the European Central Bank’s letter that was sent to Brian Lenihan is hardly surprising. What is surprising is that the ECB is going beyond its mandate of monetary policy to interfere in the fiscal policy of a sovereign nation.
Before the hysteria starts it needs to be pointed out that the tone or content of the ECB letter, while meeting the usual Irish default need to blame someone else, isn’t the point.
I was astonished by the intemperate and unfair nature of your columnist’s Victoria White’s piece on November 6 (‘Anti-water campaigners protest too much’).
