I note that the ‘creeping prohibition’ of alcohol is to begin, much as it did with tobacco 10 years ago. Prices will rise, availability will be curtailed and advertising will be restricted. Doubtless that is only the beginning.

I admire Health Minister Leo Vardkar’s proposed new drinks bill to set a minimum price for alcohol to decrease drinking and improve our health.
Ever since the arrival of Sky Sports, the world of televised sport has undergone a revolution which has seen a massive growth in the number of events available to the general public.
You cannot really call political failure to tackle alcohol companies’ sponsorship of sports spineless as it’s a tall order and has been debated for 50 years without any action.
The publication of the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015 is to be welcomed.

I know that people are sick of hearing about water — God knows, I am. But what gets to me is the people who say, ‘ah, sure, it’s only a couple of euro, pay it and be done with it’. It is a logical argument.
