I agree with Victoria White that we should teach Arabic in our schools. Arab culture can enrich our corrupt, debased Western society, and the forthcoming influx of 20,000 Arab refugees is an ideal opportunity to adopt the “Arab way”.

The deaths of 10 people at the Carrickmines Traveller halting site were awful. Dublin Castle will need to ensure what happened isn’t an echo of dispossession. If ever elected representatives and government agencies needed a reason to address deprived communities, then this is it.

Paddy Ashdown says Syria will need a peace deal backed up by the great powers. For that to happen, the great powers, ie, America and Russia, need to be talking to each other. At present, they are not. One says Assad has to go, the other says that is up to the Syrian people to decide. America and Russia have never worked together to seek peace in Syria.

Eric Conway’s (October 16) letter of support for Fr Joseph Okere’s proclamation of Catholic teaching on ‘same sex marriage’ is spot on. I, too, was amazed that any bishop would want to apologise for one his priests proclaiming Catholic teaching.
