Health Minister Simon Harris is to be encouraged — and congratulated — for insisting that funds earmarked for mental health services not be syphoned off and used elsewhere. He pointed critically to the decision by the last administration to divert €12m of the already inadequate €35m allocated to mental health services.

EXTREME weather events — exceptional floods — have caused at least 82 deaths across Europe in recent days. Lives have been lost in Germany, France, Romania, Belgium and in the massive Black Sea catchment. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses have been damaged. More are, or were, without electricity. Others still are bracing themselves for flood waters yet to arrive.
