ā€œI’m Noelle and I’m a bad runnerā€

MY NAME is Noelle and I’m a very bad runner. How bad? I knock down children. I ran over a toddler last night, and I don’t even have a vehicle.

Sun, 05 Aug, 2012

ā€œSome of the runners crumple like wobbly coltsā€

MY INTEREST in sport — which doesn’t extend beyond egg and spoon events — has never once, in the 25 years of being married, encompassed standing as I do now, in a cordoned-off area next to the finishing line of a half-iron man race, in which my husband is taking part.

ā€œI’m going to kill her, absolutely kill herā€

BRIXTON HILL, London. And there’s a man with an enormous bunch of dreadlocks fidgeting on the side of the road ahead.

Sat, 21 Jul, 2012

ā€œHave fun, love, but don’t do anything sillyā€

ON PENTECOST Island in the South Pacific, boys engage in the coming-of-age ceremony, Naghol. They climb a 70ft rickety tower, tie vines to their ankles and dive to the ground, falling at speeds of around 45mph. A dive is considered successful when the boy gets close enough to touch his head or shoulders to the ground. When the boy miscalculates the vine length and shatters Humpty-Dumpty style, it’s considered unsuccessful. While the boy makes his first dive, his mother watches. She holds an item representing his childhood and when he jumps, she throws the item away.

ā€œIs gardening complicated?ā€ she asks

MY DAUGHTERS are slumped in the back of the car with Zara bags underfoot.

Sat, 07 Jul, 2012

ā€œIt’s true what they say, isn’t it? You can’t beat sunshineā€

MY MOTHER is coming to stay.

Sat, 23 Jun, 2012

ā€˜I feel as if I’ve snorted a line of office dust, or drunk a pint of bewilderment’

I’M STANDING in a London art gallery, staring at this sentence: ā€œAt the moment of becoming our thinking ā€œIā€, we reconstruct the jarring and incompatible into crazy narratives of surrealism.ā€

Sat, 16 Jun, 2012

ā€˜What job would you do if you weren’t a writer?’

A TEACHER has invited me to school to talk to a class of 11- and 12-year-olds about journalism.

Sat, 09 Jun, 2012

ā€œThat panic face would have got you out aliveā€

WE’RE WATCHING Titanic at home.

Sat, 02 Jun, 2012

ā€œAnd then they were goneā€

MY MEMORIES of the old, soft days of parenting seem to have merged into one — a generic day, punctuated by kisses, which went like this: ā€œDrink your milk — last drop, one shoe on — now the other one, hold my hand, five-a-day, sharing is caring — yes — even with scones, bath-time, pyjamas, time for bed, two stories, there’s no such thing as monsters, night, night,ā€ sofa, glass of wine, box-set.
