The idea of applying car safety standards to bicycles is an interesting one. With n+ unveiling a new range of premium electric bicycles under licence from Volkswagen, the focus has shifted away from simple battery life toward something far more critical: visibility and awareness. It is an ambitious attempt to bridge the gap between motorists and cyclists.

Smart view

One of the most notable additions is Smart View. This system uses a radar-activated rear-view camera mounted in the handlebars. The goal is to allow riders to see behind them without physically turning their heads, which can be dangerous in heavy traffic. If the integration works as promised, it could significantly reduce the distraction caused by checking for approaching vehicles at junctions.

Smart lights

The Smart Lights feature an LED strip integrated into the top tube of the bike frame. It is not just a styling choice; the light turns red when braking and amber when turning. This mimics the behaviour of car indicators, helping motorists anticipate a cyclist's next move. In an age where urban congestion is increasing, having a bike that signals its intentions as clearly as a car is a much-needed development.

Smart helmet

The safety ecosystem extends to a Bluetooth-linked helmet. Alongside integrated lighting, it includes an accelerometer that detects crashes and sends emergency messages to loved ones. While adding more electronics to a helmet can feel like unnecessary complexity, crash detection is a significant feature for those riding solo or in low-light conditions on less travelled roads.

Smart glasses

Perhaps the most ambitious, if slightly experimental, part of the range is the Smart Glasses. Using technology derived from fighter pilot heads-up displays, these glasses project navigation and blind spot alerts directly into the rider's field of vision. It’s a high-tech approach to keeping eyes on the road, though it remains to be seen how much riders will embrace such a digital interface.

Peter Jost, CEO of Volkswagen Accessories, Lifestyle and Licencing Business, states, “technologies like these are most commonly known from the automotive world. Seeing them make their way onto an e-bike demonstrates how technologies can evolve and be adapted in meaningful ways”.

Whether this suite of technology becomes a standard for all urban commuters or remains a niche luxury, it certainly pushes the conversation toward a more integrated approach to road safety.
