Unleashing audio adventures: Suunto Sonic's dynamic design and performance

Suunto has carved out a niche with its innovative range of products designed to enhance athletic performance. Among its latest offerings, the Suunto Sonic bone conduction sports headphones are the little sibling of the Suunto Wing headphones, which I reviewed recently. The Sonic has many of the same great features as the Wing but ditches the charging cradle and instead comes with a more standard, albeit proprietary, magnetic charging cable.
The Sonic headphones are sleek and ergonomic, weighing only 31g – 2g lighter than the Wing. Constructed with titanium and silicone, they offer a slim profile that fits comfortably under helmets or caps, making them ideal for outdoor activities.
One of the main reasons for buying the Sonic over more traditional in-ear buds is their open-ear design. This lets you remain aware of your surroundings while enjoying your favourite tunes, ensuring safety during activities. While walking or cycling, they felt light, and I quickly forgot I was wearing them because they were not as bulky as cheaper ones.
Equipped with a newly designed sound transducer, the Sonic deliver a rich audio experience with enhanced bass effect and reduced noise leakage. I didn’t notice much difference between the sound quality of the Wing and the Sonic. While both are great for open-ear headphones, they fall short regarding bass response and loudness compared to in-ear buds.
You can enjoy uninterrupted music playback during their workouts with up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge and quick 60-minute charging capabilities.
The headphones feature a dual microphone system and cVc noise reduction, enabling clear phone calls even at speeds up to 15km/h. I didn’t notice any major wind noise issues while cycling either. Compared to the Wing's IP67 classification, the Sonic has an IP55, which makes them sweat and light-rain-resistant.
The Sonic connects seamlessly via Bluetooth 5.2 and provides quick, hassle-free music or podcast access. Integrating the Suunto app enhances user experience, allowing for easy sound modes and customisation settings. Additionally, the multi-function button on the headphones enables convenient control over calls, music playback, and volume adjustment, adding to their overall convenience and usability.
