Aqara FP2 Presence Sensor: Sleep monitoring and home automation

The Aqara FP2 Presence Sensor introduces an interesting approach to sleep monitoring technology similar to what I've seen on Google Hub. The sensor offers data tracking, including sleep duration, stages, heart rate, respiratory rate and much more.
The FP2 is a small puck-like device that can be placed on a wall, ceiling or shelf. It comes with a metal disk with a self-adhesive pad on the back. This can be stuck on a wall, and the FP2 magnetically connects to it. There’s no camera, and you don’t have to wear it, but it does require power via a USB power source.

The sensor uses zone positioning, which is more advanced than conventional motion sensors, by utilising radar technology to monitor rooms up to 40 sq m. Divided into customisable zones, it precisely monitors specific areas such as sofas, beds, or desktops, enabling tailored automation for each zone.

The FP2 can detect up to five individuals, allowing for personalised automation responses based on each person's position. Whether it's triggering scenes when someone sits on the sofa or walks into the room, this sensor ensures seamless integration into daily routines.
Privacy and accuracy are paramount, and the FP2 excels in both aspects. Its ability to detect subtle movements like breathing ensures precise human presence detection without compromising privacy.

Compatible with leading smart home platforms, including Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant, Alexa, and Google Home, the FP2 integrates into existing setups without additional hubs. This ensures seamless connectivity and control over other smart devices.

For testing, I created a simple Alexa routine that turned on the hall lights when I entered, but you could also have it announce a welcome home message on your Alexa speaker or play music or a podcast. You could also create a routine to turn off all the lights when the FP2 detects no presence or when you leave home. The possibilities are endless and can be as simple or as complex as you’d like.
The Aqara can create automation, but you will be limited by how many other Aqara devices you have. It does work well, and automations are easy to create within the app. You can create zones, check the occupancy state and check illuminance in lux from the built-in light meter.
Fall detection and alerts
Equipped with fall detection capabilities, the FP2 provides added safety for users, particularly the elderly or infirm. In the event of a fall, it notifies designated contacts discreetly, offering peace of mind without invasive monitoring. The sensor's coverage area has a radius of 2 meters, boasting a fall detection accuracy exceeding 98%. It's essential to mount the sensor on the ceiling for optimal performance.
The Aqara FP2 Presence Sensor is an alternative to traditional wearables for sleep monitoring for those who don’t want to wear a device in bed. It also works well with all the major smart home protocols for home automation, but you must use other software to make it work. The applications for the FP2 are endless and only limited by your imagination.
