In the fast-evolving world of dash cams, the A229 Pro promises to be a game-changer, offering a top-notch driving experience with its cutting-edge features and state-of-the-art technology.

Design

The A229 Pro boasts a large 2.4-inch HD display, setting it apart from Viofo's previous models with conventional 2-inch screens. This upgrade improves the live viewing experience and enhances heat dissipation and durability. However, the display doesn’t support touch, so you have to navigate via the buttons below the display.

The rear panel includes LED indicators for power and GPS status and the standard REC, MIC, and Wi-Fi indicators. With its compact design, slim coaxial rear cable, and miniature connectors, the A229 Pro makes it easy to install.

The dash cam includes a USB-C charging cable, which is great to see instead of the more dated mini USB, which many other dash cams still use.

The USB-C end of the cable is angled at 90 degrees, while the other end is a standard USB-A. This allows excellent flexibility for vehicles with USB ports, but Viofo also includes a cigarette lighter adaptor with two USB ports.

The front camera can be angled vertically to achieve optimum viewing, but it’s best to test where you want to stick the dash cam on your windscreen since it doesn’t offer any left or right adjustments. The mount sticks to the windscreen with double-sided 3M tape. The dash cam snaps into the mount, making it quick and easy to remove if needed.

A circular polarising lens also comes in the box, and it snaps onto the front of the lens to reduce glare from the windscreen and thus improve clarity.

Triple cameras

The A229 Pro uses dual Sony Starvis 2 image sensors, reproducing excellent video quality. The front camera features an 8-megapixel 1/1.8-inch image sensor (IMX678), packing in more pixels for greater clarity and detail, especially in low-light conditions. It captures 4K Ultra HD videos at 30fps with a wide 140Ëš viewing angle, while the rear camera records 2K Quad HD videos at 30fps with an even wider 160Ëš viewing angle.

The interior camera uses a Sony Starvis IMX307 sensor and advanced HDR technology, ensuring a clear and detailed capture of the entire cabin. This camera also has a built-in IR light sensor, which can automatically trigger the activation of four infrared LED lights when the camera detects low light levels within the car cabin. The result is the ability to record sharp, black-and-white image details, even in complete darkness.

The high 4K resolution and a high-tech sensor make the video quality excellent. License plates and road signs are more visible, even in challenging conditions like high-speed driving or low-light environments. Of course, clarity will vary depending on lighting, weather conditions and distance from objects.

Advanced voice control and dual-band Wi-Fi

The A229 Pro has an advanced voice control feature, allowing users to safely control various functions with simple spoken commands such as starting/stopping recording, taking photos, and toggling Wi-Fi on/off. The dash cam also supports dual-band 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, allowing users to select the band based on their needs. The 5GHz offers the best speeds for downloading video recordings from the A229 Pro, while 2.4GHz is more compatible with older phones.

The dash cam offers smooth integration with your smartphone through a USB 2.0 Type-C to Type-C data cable, allowing even faster downloads of photos and videos. For example, the iPhone 15 can download files at up to 20 MB/s. This direct link simplifies the process of firmware updates, guaranteeing seamless access to the latest features and ensuring peak performance.

Parking modes and 24/7 surveillance

The A229 Pro has three parking modes (requires optional HK4 hardwire kit). It ensures 24/7 surveillance of a parked vehicle, bringing peace of mind. The built-in G-sensor detects impacts or significant movements, triggering the dashcam to start recording and providing crucial evidence in case of damage or incidents while the vehicle is parked.

Optional extras

Optional accessories for the A229 Pro include the HK4 hardware kit (€16.48), which provides continuous power for parking monitoring. The Bluetooth emergency remote control (€18.31) can be easily positioned safely and conveniently while driving, instantly locking the current video clip or image with a button press. The A229 Pro supports up to 512GB of external storage via microSD, which is sold separately.

Extra features

The A229 Pro is designed to offer a seamless experience with features like auto-event detection, time-lapse recording, and low-bitrate recording. These additions enhance the overall functionality of the dash cam, ensuring users have access to a comprehensive set of tools for capturing and reviewing footage.

Verdict

The A229 Pro 4K has top-notch recording capabilities, advanced technologies, and user-friendly features, setting a new standard for clarity and performance. For those who demand the best in technology and driving experience, the A229 Pro is a compelling choice that pushes the boundaries of what a dash cam can achieve.
