Apple may replace Touch ID with facial recognition

Apple may consider replacing its current Touch ID biometric security technology with a facial recognition system for the iPhone 8.

Apple may be considering replacing its Touch ID biometric fingerprint identification technology with a new facial recognition system for the iPhone 8, according to an article from MacRumours based on a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Referring to recent patents Apple has applied for, Kuo states:

“We believe it is leaning toward facial recognition technology rather than iris recognition. However, we note that the technical challenges of facial recognition include: (1) algorithms; (2) hardware design; and (3) the build-out of a database for verification and authentication, which could be time consuming. As such, before Apple can fully replace the fingerprint system with facial recognition, a combination of the two steps of bio-recognition could be a valid solution for enhancing transactions security”

If Kuo’s predictions are correct, Apple could lead the industry in advanced biometric identification systems for smartphones.
