Live action Mulan coming in 2018

Mulan is heading back to cinemas with a live action version planned to be in cinemas in 2018. Are we ok with this?

Disney's Mulan came towards the tail end of the 90s resurgence for the studio and remains a fun feaure with some gorgeous animation and an energetic performance by Eddie Murphy. It's not a classic but one you might have fond memories for. Now it's being remade as a live action feature...

This follows a new pattern for Disney revisiting their animated films in live-action retellings. Cinderella and Maleficent did decent numbers and The Jungle Book exploded at the box office, so expect this trend to continue for a good while yet.

A version had been attempted by the house of mouse a few years back but it's fully happening right now, with the latest news confirming a release date of November 2018. Disney also confirmed that the hunt for a Chinese lead is currently underway, which makes it seem like they're going to have quite a rush to get that process completed, a director chosen and pre-production sorted in time.

There's merit to the idea of creating an epic action/adventure film, especially with a Chinese cast to get a foothold in that lucrative market. It remains to be seen whether we're also going to get musical numbers for this story of a young woman pretending to be a man to go off to war.
