New Scarface to be written by Wolf of Wall Street scribe

Director Antoine Fuqua has been doing a great job in recent years with hits like The Equalizer and The Magnificent Seven, and his next project represents a whole new challenge.

That's because he's attached to a new take on Scarface, following on from previous entries starring Al Pacino in 1983 and Paul Mini in 1932- itself inspired by an earlier book which borrowed heavily from the life and times of Al Capone.

So the story is far from original and while Brian DePalma's 80s version might be revered that doesn't mean a remake, or a retelling, isn't long overdue.

The latest news on the project from Variety is that Terrence Winter is doing a polish of the script which originally came from Straight Outta Compton scribe Jonathan Herman. This fella has form, with previous work on The Wolf of Wall Street and a creator/writer role on Boardwalk Empire.

We're hearing that the plot this time will revolve around a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles, and he probably rises from nothing to head a criminal enterprise.

There's no timeline on this film just yet, but don't expect a release before 2018.
