Elon Musk says 'Get Your Ass to Mars!'
The actual speech was very dense and not particularly speculative- he has the design of the craft, cost breakdowns and a rough idea of how long it would take to properly colonise the planet - about 100 years from when it starts.
Really the main issue is how much money it's going to take, and the main spur of his talk was about working to bring down the cost per person to what someone is willing to spend on an average home in the USA. That's around 200,000 dollars and it makes sense as a concept as you would be buying into a new life on another planet, a new home if you will.
There was a lot to take in with the full video but The Verge has done a great job breaking down the main points.
This dude wants to go to Mars, and he wants you to have fun while you're travelling there in as little as 30 days! This is all pretty nuts when you actually take a moment to think about it but it's that pause which makes it seem impossible. If you're Elon Musk you just go for it, and that's the kind of attitude which might actually get us to the stars before the century turns again.
