Jurassic World 2 will have a dino-sized budget

Movies are an expensive business but at some point the costs start to get a bit ridiculous. And we might have reached that point...

Jurassic World 2 recently picked up a director in the form of The Impossible's J.A. Bayona, who is currently out doing the rounds for his latest film A Monster Calls. That's a pretty low budget drama with some special effects but it seems the director is going to be working with a tad more money on his next picture.

According to a translation of a spanish-language interview, the budget for the new film with be a whopping $260 million! (via scified and El Pais Semenal).

Now any movie in this series is going to feature a lot of special effects and after the first revamp was a huge hit they're going to have to go bigger for the next one, with all sorts of mental theories in the mix. But that cash still seems like a huge hunk to spend on a film.

Consider that teh most expensive films ever made generally got that way due to major problems on set like delays on the freaking set blowing away in bad weather. Films like Pirates 4 pushed over 370 million, John Carter cost 263 million because it was a disaster and the 260 million cost for Tangled happened because most of the film was thrown out and remade late in production.

To start at a cost like this for JW 2 is pretty insane, and it can only go up from there. Promotion and advertising often cost up to half the main budget, or more in the case of a film of this scale. Universal might have a bill of close to 400 million dollars before a single bum hits a single seat.

Still when the first film made 1.6 billion at the box office, it might still seem like a safe bet.

Jurassic World 2 is set for release on the 22nd of June, 2018.
