Samsung may be next to ditch headphone jack

Apple made a bold move by dropping the headphone jack from the recently announced iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but others may soon follow. A report indicates that Samsung will be the next to abandon the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung may be next to ditch headphone jack

Sources "involved in the broader supply chain of Samsung's smartphones" told Digital Music News that Samsung and other Android manufacturers could soon follow suit. Not only will these Android manufacturers release a proprietary headphone jack of their own, but they will also block Apple from licensing it.

This could potentially force headphone manufacturers to choose which port to prioritise. Of course, the other option is that wireless headphones become more prominent.

One benefit of this move, according to one of the sources, is that sound quality could be improved. It’s early days yet, and it’s unclear when, or perhaps even if, Samsung and other Android manufacturers will go ahead with this.
