And somehow in the middle of all that he managed to write, direct and star in an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 2012 novel Live by Night. It's set in the early 20th century and follows a dude called Joe Coughlin who gets involved in the illegal trade of drink during Prohibition and digs deeper into the criminal underground from there.
Here's the terrific first trailer for Live By Night.
It's not a surprise that Affleck is a storyteller, the fellow won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting twenty years ago and his Argo won Best Picture in 2013. He's played with Lehane's material before with 2007's Gone Baby Gone and in the crime world some more with The Town.
This film was originally set to be produced with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role and while that would have been interesting to see there's clearly a special relationship going on between Warner Bros and Affleck, and we're pretty sure he's going to knock this one out of the park.
The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller and our own Brendan Gleeson and it looks like it's going to be a pretty dark and nasty affair, which is just right for the source material.
Live by Night is getting a limited release in the States before Christmas (likely for Oscar contention) and will be out in Ireland on the 13th of January, 2017.
