Blade Runner 2 won't have a Vangelis score

The original Blade Runner had a really memorable score by Vangelis but that won't be happening this time around.

Blade Runner 2 won't have a Vangelis score

The as yet untitled sequel to Blade Runner (people don't like numbers after movies these days) is sounding really interesting, with a canny director in Denis Villeneuve and a cast including Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Jared Leto and a returning Harrison Ford.

Now there more news on the crew side, including that the score will be composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson. He's an Icelandic soundsmith who has recieved Oscar nominations for The Theory of Everything and Sicario. That second film saw him working with Villeneuve and it was a heck of a score, with a thrumming throughline that really sold the intensity of the picture.

The only bad part of the news is that we definitely won't be getting new tunes from Vangelis, which was a huge part of the style of Ridley Scott's 1982 original. A new film calls for a whole new style though, and we're confident that this is going to at least be a sequel which doesn't just pander to the first film.

Blade Runner: The Sequel is out in October 2017.
