Adblock Plus counters Facebook's new ads - Facebook to disable new workaround
All you need to do is update your Adblock Plus filters and you should be free from Facebook's ads on desktop once again. The solution has been pushed out quite quickly, and Adblock Plus' Ben Williams notes that it hasn't been heavily tested.
Facebook hasn't taken too kindly to this and says that it might actually punish users. "We're disappointed that ad blocking companies are punishing people on Facebook as these new attempts don't just block ads but also posts from friends and Pages," a spokesperson for Facebook told The Verge.
The social network is reportedly already rolling out code that will disable Adblock's workaround.
This is something that Williams expected to happen. In a blog post, he wrote, "This sort of back-and-forth battle between the open source ad-blocking community and circumventers has been going on since ad blocking was invented; so it's very possible that Facebook will write some code that will render the filter useless -- at any time."
"If that happens, the ad-blocking community will likely find another workaround, then Facebook might circumvent again, etc."
We're sure this battle will rage on for some time.
