Cruel Intentions TV series could be extra racy

Cruel Intentions is coming back, this time in the form of a TV series that's currently gestating at NBC and might find a racier home.

Back in 1999 fresh faced things Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe starred in Cruel Intentions, a sexed up teenage take on Pierre Choderlos 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses which turned some heads for it's racy content, even earning an 18s rating in Ireland.

Now a TV version is in the works which will bring Sarah Michelle Gellar back to the material as a sequel to the original film, neatly forgetting about those pretty awful straight to video sequels. The show is set up at NBC and was set to debut this season, but it looks like there has been a delay.

And it turns out that the show could be honouring the tone of the original in every way, with some content that won't necessarily be suitable for network TV. As they search for a place for Cruel Intentions, NBC is open to the possibility of creating two different versions of the pilot- one that could be aired under the stricter guidelines of the major networks and another that would be more risque and potentially end up on a streaming service.

This news comes out of a presentation by NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke at the Television Critics Association and could make the series into an interesting number for someone like Netflix to snap up, particularly as Gellar is locked into a contract. Expect more news soon.
