VIDEO: The Martian SFX - some of it was real

While we're still a bit confused by the fact that The Martian won best comedy at the 2016 Golden Globes, it's definitely one of the more memorable films of last year, and a technical marvel to boot.

That's pretty much expected when it comes to director Ridley Scott, who stunned the world with only his second feature - 1979's Alien. Outings like Blade Runner, Legend, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven have just added to those credentials over the years. The Martian is quite a grounded film in many ways, being set in a fairly possible near future, but that doesn't mean that it isn't gorgeously designed.

One big element of that, quite necessary in an expensive sci-fi picture, is the visual effects. They were completed by the Moving Picture Company which has previously received acclaim for their work on Man of Steel, The Lone Ranger, all the way back to Sunshine in 2007. They worked on everything which takes place on the red planet and you can get a glimpse at the amount of extra content which was required in this reel.
