The Magicians is based on a series of books by Lev Grossman. The first book came along in 2009 and is all about a young man called Quentin Coldwater who is obsessed with a fictional magical world called Fillory and ends up going to a secret school for magic. This isn't Harry Potter though, the story in the books at least is much darker and the setting on Syfy means that they have some scope to keep the nastier material intact.
The series has been in the works since 2011 and moved around a bit before settling at Syfy. If any of that sounds interesting to you, the first full episode is below.
