WhatsApp dropping its subscription fee

WhatsApp announced that it is scrapping its annual $1 subscription fee. What will you do with all your new-found savings?

WhatsApp dropping its subscription fee

Currently, the service is free for a year. After that, you’re charged $1 each year, but WhatsApp is to abandon this model. WhatsApp founder Jan Koum revealed that the service is scrapping this fee saying that the charging system “really doesn’t work that well.”

Rather than introducing ads to make up the difference, WhatsApp plans to find new ways to connect users with businesses and organisations. This may sound familiar as Facebook, which also owns WhatsApp, is doing something similar with its own Messenger app.
