VIDEO: Behind the scenes on the Revenant

The Revenant is a film which has been earning a lot of attention over the last few months, and not only because it features a starry cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson. There's also the not insignificant matter that it's the latest film from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who caused a huge storm at the end of 2014 with Birdman, and went on to win best director at the 2015 Academy Awards.

But there's even more going on, especially behind the scenes. We've heard stories of the challenging conditions the film was shot in, in the icy wastes at the top of the world using only available light. There are tales of cast and crew falling out and people walking off the production as the budget ballooned far beyond its original modest figure - potentially rising to as much as $165 million dollars. It's never going to make that back.

The strife has been captured for posterity in a new behind the scenes video which is a fascinating glimpse at what it takes to make a movie on the edge of reason.

It all looks absolutely insane, and you can tell from the way these pros are handling the interviews that there's a lot more to tell. Let's just hope there's a lengthy and candid doc on the home video release.

The Revenant is out in cinemas in the States now and comes to Ireland and the UK on the 15th of January 2016.
